Kalyan Matrimony - A Typical Maharashtrian Joyful Wedding

As we all know, Kalyan is the nearest city to Mumbai in Karnataka, a South Indian state. Of course, the Kalyan matrimony will be following the same traditions followed in Maharashtra. After deciding the bride and the groom, the party starts. Whether it is an arranged marriage with a groom selected from a Kalyan Matrimonial site or a love marriage, the marriage traditions will definitely loot your attention.

Marriage traditions in Kalyan, Thane

The starting point of a marriage ceremony will be the engagement of the couple that will seal the fact of them being united. The Kalyan wedding traditions also comprise of three events as below.
  1. Pre-wedding
  2. wedding
  3. Post wedding

Pre-wedding

The pre-wedding ceremony in a Maharashtra wedding is further divided into three events as below.

Sakhar Puda

This is a common engagement ceremony in Kalyan matrimonials where the groom puts a ring in the bride's finger, as done in almost every Hindu engagement ceremonies.

Kelvan Ritual

This ritual is a special devotion of both families; the family deity and the Kuldevta. Mostly the Kuldevta of both the families will be the same since they both belong to the same community (most of the time).

Halad Chadavane

This ritual is the same as that of the South Indian Hindu ritual of turmeric being applied to the bride and the groom. Here mango leaves are added to the turmeric.

Wedding Ceremony

After all the pre-wedding rituals are done, the wedding day arrives. On this day, the first ritual is to receive the groom at the wedding venue. The bride's mother welcomes the groom at the venue and washes his feet. This ritual is done by the bride's father in Karnataka's wedding traditions. This is named as Seemant Pooja. Afterward, the bride along with her family goes to worship the goddess Parvati. This ritual is named as Gaurihar Pooja. Following this pooja, the Antarpat ritual takes place in which a shawl is placed between the bride and the groom to restrict them from seeing each other until the priest completes chanting the mantras. The Sankalp ritual is the next in which the shawl is removed and the couple exchanges a look and garlands. Then when the bride's father takes her hand and places it on that of the groom, he ties the mangalsutra around the bride's neck. The Kalyan wedding matrimony ends there when the couple takes 7 rounds around the fire and the guests are served food.

Post-wedding

The post-wedding ceremony in the Kalyan marriage rituals is mostly the same as that all the Southern states are following. The bride will go the groom's house where she is received by her mother-in-law. The rice bowl is kicked off and the couple enters the house with their right foot first.

Conclusion

As the overall population of South India is predominantly Hindus, their marriage rituals are quite the same with some changes here and there in the practices. Comparing to the other state traditions the Kalyan matrimony (which is actually a Maharashtrian marriage) is somewhat simple and beautiful.
