Punjabi Matrimony
Punjabi Marriage Rituals
The traditions and ceremonies in wedding strong reflect the Punjabi culture. You will see men and women singing boliyan, the local songs at the wedding. Engagement is called Mangni/shagun by Punjabis and is usually a high profile affair. The wedding celebrations start with tikka ceremony and can last for even a week. The bride's family hosts Sangeeth in which close members of the groom's family are invited. The last major function before the wedding is Mehendi. The wedding concludes with pheras around sacred fire & bride's parents give her hand to the groom in a ceremony called Kanyadaan. In a sikh wedding, the bride & groom walk in tow around the holy book Guru Granth Sahib four times.
